Green streets. Historic blocks. Center City.
Washington Square West brings together some of the best parts of Center City living: tree-lined residential streets, historic architecture, neighborhood restaurants, independent businesses, nightlife, and one of Philadelphia’s most beautiful public squares. With everything from quiet side streets to the energy of Midtown Village just blocks away, the neighborhood offers plenty to explore without ever feeling far from home.
WHY PEOPLE LOVE IT
Green Space
Washington Square gives the neighborhood a true backyard in the middle of the city. Shaded paths, mature trees, benches, open lawns, and smaller neighborhood green spaces offer places to walk, read, relax, or simply take a break from the pace of Center City.

Walkability
Restaurants, shops, theaters, hospitals, parks, nightlife, and Center City destinations are all close by. Walk east toward Philadelphia’s historic district, west toward the Avenue of the Arts, north toward Market Street, or south toward South Street without needing to leave the neighborhood behind.
Neighborhood Character
Historic rowhouses and tree-lined blocks sit alongside restaurants, boutiques, theaters, and longtime neighborhood institutions. Washington Square West includes Midtown Village and the Gayborhood, giving the larger neighborhood a mix of residential charm, LGBTQ+ culture, dining, shopping, and nightlife.

From Potter's Field to City Park.
Washington Square was one of the five public squares included in William Penn’s original plan for Philadelphia. Originally called Southeast Square, it later served as a potter’s field and burial ground for Revolutionary War soldiers and victims of the 1793 yellow fever epidemic. It was renamed Washington Square in 1825 and today is home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the American Revolution.

APM Recommends: Talula's Garden
Start with the cheddar-chive biscuits and honey butter, one of the restaurant’s best-known favorites, then explore the seasonal menu or one of its curated cheese selections. If the weather cooperates, ask for a table in the garden courtyard — it’s a great way to experience one of Washington Square West’s standout dining spots.
