Industrial roots. Creative momentum.

Kensington is one of Philadelphia’s most historically layered neighborhoods, shaped by manufacturing, rowhouse blocks, immigrant communities, small businesses, and a growing creative scene. Today, old industrial buildings stand alongside studios, cafés, breweries, galleries, workshops, and new residential spaces, giving the area a character that feels both deeply rooted and constantly evolving.

Arts
& Makers

Kensington’s industrial buildings have become home to artists, craftspeople, fabricators, designers, and small creative businesses. Studios, galleries, workshops, and maker spaces give the neighborhood a hands-on creative identity that feels closely tied to its manufacturing past.

Food & Local Businesses

Independent cafés, bakeries, breweries, neighborhood restaurants, and small businesses are scattered throughout Kensington and along nearby corridors like Frankford Avenue. The area rewards exploring block by block, with longtime local spots sitting alongside newer additions.

Neighborhood Character

Brick rowhouses, former factories, warehouses, churches, corner stores, and industrial streets give Kensington a look and rhythm that is distinctly Philadelphia. Its close proximity to Fishtown, East Kensington, and the Market-Frankford Line also keeps the neighborhood connected to the rest of the city.

Built by Industry.

Kensington grew into one of Philadelphia’s major manufacturing districts during the 19th century, becoming especially known for textile production, weaving, and related industries. Factories, mills, workshops, and worker housing shaped the neighborhood for generations. As manufacturing declined, many of those same industrial spaces found new uses, becoming studios, businesses, residences, and creative workspaces that still reflect the area’s industrial past.

Where to Eat: Fiore

APM Recommends:

Fiore

Start with one of the pastries or the breakfast sandwich on house-baked bread, then come back for lunch to try the focaccia, Roman-style pizza, or one of the rotating handmade pastas. Fiore is especially good for a relaxed morning or afternoon stop while

exploring Frankford Avenue.
