Big personality. Block by block.
South Philly is where some of Philadelphia’s strongest neighborhood traditions come together. Rowhouse-lined streets, longtime family businesses, restaurants, markets, parks, sports, and communities from around the world give the area an unmistakable character. Stretching south from South Street between the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers, South Philadelphia includes neighborhoods such as Bella Vista, East Passyunk, Pennsport, Point Breeze, Newbold,
and Grays Ferry.

WHY WE LOVE IT
Food &
Markets
South Philly is one of the city’s great food destinations. The Italian Market, East Passyunk Avenue, Washington Avenue, neighborhood bakeries, corner stores, taquerias, Vietnamese restaurants, old-school Italian spots, and newer destination restaurants create an incredible mix of cuisines within a relatively small part of the city.

Neighborhood Character
Block after block of brick rowhouses, stoops, corner businesses, churches, murals, and longtime neighborhood institutions give South Philly its strong sense of place. Italian, Irish, Black, Latino, and Southeast Asian communities have all shaped the area, creating a neighborhood culture that continues to evolve while holding onto deep local traditions.

Sports & Entertainment
South Philadelphia is home to the city’s major sports complex, where the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, and 76ers all play within the same district. Add in the Navy Yard, FDR Park, South Street, neighborhood festivals, and annual traditions like the Mummers Parade, and there’s rarely a shortage of something happening nearby.

A Neighborhood Built by Generations.
South Philadelphia’s history is closely tied to immigration and working-class life. Italian immigrants arrived in large numbers beginning in the late 19th century, joining earlier Irish, German, Jewish, Black, and other communities. Later generations of Latino and Southeast Asian residents added new businesses, traditions, and institutions. From the Italian Market to Washington Avenue, the neighborhood continues to reflect the generations of people who built lives here.

Where to Eat: The Victor
Café
APM Recommends:
The Victor Café
Come for dinner and stay for the opera. Order one of the classic Italian entrées, then enjoy the live performances that break out throughout the evening. Film fans may recognize the restaurant too —
The Victor Café appeared as Adrian’s Restaurant in
Rocky Balboa, Creed, and Creed II.
