A Neighborhood Built on Philadelphia's Evolution.
Long before Fitler Square became one of Center City's most desirable residential neighborhoods, the area along the Schuylkill River was a center of shipping, shipbuilding, brick-making, and manufacturing. As the city expanded westward during the 19th century, workers and families settled among the narrow streets and rowhouses that still give the neighborhood much of its character today.
