Rittenhouse Square is one of the five original public squares laid out in William Penn’s 1682 plan for Philadelphia. Originally known as Southwest Square, it was renamed in 1825 for Philadelphia astronomer and patriot David Rittenhouse. By the 19th century, grand homes and mansions transformed the surrounding streets into one of
Philadelphia’s most fashionable residential districts.
